Action

Many people find environmental action overwhelming due to the negative messages they recieve about environmental issues. We have tried to focus instead on the positive actions you can take to help the environment rather than lecturing about negative impacts. We hope that we have managed to produce a positive page with easy to follow steps, however if you find the information overwhelming, feel free to skip to our remember page where we have outlined some easy ways we can all make a difference. Also look at the lovely pictures of monkeys, we have tried to use pictures of what your actions will help to save rather than showing the problems.

As you no doubt know, conservation is an increasingly important part of life. We have to change the way we use the planet's natural resources to allow humans to continue to live in the numbers that we have amassed. As a Western consumer you have a lot of potential power for good. The smallest changes to your life and patterns of consumption can make a very real difference to the state of natural spaces and environments both locally and globally.

In Asia, Africa and now South America rainforests are being cleared to plant oil palm plantations. This intensive use of the land and destruction of whole ecosystems is unsustainable. Besides the untold damage of wholesale destruction of natural environments that have taken several 1000 years to create, the loss of individual animals and whole species may have impacts that we do not understand and cannot anticipate. To find out more about the issues surrounding palm oil see our palm oil page.

There are many different types of pet, cats, dogs, hamsters etc. each one is a serious commitment that shouldn't be taken on unless it is thoroughly researched and can be afforded. The difficulties that can arise while keeping a domestic animal as a pet are magnified if the pet is a wild and exotic animal. It is difficult to provide the best possible environment for exotic animals particularly highly intelligent ones like primates in captivitiy in zoos and wildlife parks. It is basically impossible to re-create anything close to a good environment for a pet primate. To find out more about primates and other exotic animals as pets see our primates as pets page.
